What is a depression? No, not what is depression but what is a depression?

A depression is a hollowing out of a somewhat smooth surface. The bottom of the depression is below the surface of the main surface. A depression in a road could be called a pothole or a rut and can cause serious damage to a vehicle's alignment. A depression out in the desert has the potential of saving a life if it were to collect rain water. I once had a depression in a muscle indicating a process of atrophying taking place. So a depression can be dangerous, can be beneficial, and can be a valuable warning to take some action.

As we apply this perspective to depression as it relates to our emotional life we can see how the same three guidelines are appropriate.

There's no lack of evidence as to the damage that sustained depression can cause to an individual, family, career and finances. A life that hits pothole after pothole gets severely misaligned and will wear out very quickly.

Depression as something beneficial is a little less publicized. When you see our emotions as a guidance system however, depression, if visited for short periods of time can be like a quick sip at the drinking fountain that quickly reminds us that we are off course from that which brings us joy and keeps us healthy. Sadness and melancholy are a natural byproduct of living in a world where there is constant pressure and survival energy permeates the ethers. To feel these emotions gives us a reference point and comparison to what joy and fulfillment is like.

When feelings of sadness turn to hopelessness however and inertia begins to set it, then your oil light will be flashing telling you to pull over and look under the hood! Depression is a warning sign that other systems will be compromised if the appropriate action is not taken.

So what is the appropriate action? Drugs will only alter the body's chemical reactions that have become out of alignment because of the habitual stage of destructive beliefs and feel
